My Story From a Calling to Courageous Goodbyes®

A Legacy of Holding Space

Hello, I am Beverley Shiels, the founder of Courageous Goodbyes®. As a trained and Registered End-of-Life Doula with the End-of-Life Doula Association of Canada, I offer a steady, compassionate non-medical presence for individuals and families navigating life's final chapter.

I have always held space for others. Even as a child, I was the one people naturally turned to in difficult times, the friend who listened without judgment, sat quietly with grief, and stayed present with stories of life and loss. In time, I came to understand that this was never simply a personality trait; it is my heritage.

You see, my great-grandmother and my aunt served their communities from birth through death, holding the sacred moments at both ends of life with grace and devotion. That lineage of care is woven into who I am. It is the deep-rooted foundation beneath everything I offer today.

The Moment of Recognition

In 2016, my purpose took a definitive shape. Through a series of vivid dreams and a persistent inner calling, I felt drawn toward a specific kind of service, though I didn't yet have the language for it. The moment I first heard the term "Death Doula," something in me simply recognized it, and it was the clarity I had been waiting for.

I named my practice Courageous Goodbyes® to honour the immense bravery it takes to face life's hardest milestones with intention and grace. These are the goodbyes we say to our health, to the lives we have known, and eventually, to the people we love most. My role is to hold the sacred, steady space where that courage can exist and be witnessed.

Walking Beside You

As your End-of-Life Doula, my deepest commitment is to support you in living fully for as long as possible, entirely on your own terms. I am here to ensure you feel empowered, informed, and accompanied; not managed, not processed, but truly seen.

Whether I am bridging the space between your medical team and the road ahead, or supporting the quieter, more intimate work of preparation and reflection, my priority never changes: your voice remains at the heart of every decision. I walk beside you as a devoted advocate and companion, ensuring your journey is guided by purpose, clarity, and the dignity you deserve.

"To be with another in this way — to be present with them in their hour of need — this is the most human thing we can do."
