From A Dream To Courageous Goodbyes®

A Companion for the Sacred Journey. Hello, I am Beverley Shiels, the founder of Courageous Goodbyes®. As a trained and Registered End-of-Life Doula with the End-of-Life Doula Association of Canada, I provide a steady, non-medical presence for those navigating life’s final chapter.

A Calling Deeply Rooted. My journey began long before I had the words to describe it. Since childhood, I have been the person others naturally turn to in difficult times—the friend who listens, reassures, and holds space for the most personal stories of life and loss.

I later discovered that this path was paved long ago; my great-grandmother and aunt served their communities from birth through death. This legacy of care is woven into my DNA, forming the foundation of the compassionate support I offer today.

Finding My Purpose. In 2016, my life’s purpose came into focus. When I first heard the term "Death Doula," everything clicked. I recognized it immediately as the work I was called to do.

I chose the name End-of-Life Doula because my focus is on living fully until the end—ensuring that you are empowered, informed, and supported every step of the way. Whether I am coordinating with medical teams or facilitating transitions with funeral homes, my goal is to ensure your voice remains central to the experience.

The Meaning Behind Courageous Goodbyes® I chose this name to honour the immense courage it takes to face life’s hardest milestones—the goodbyes we say to our health, to our lives, and to our loved ones.

Courageous Goodbyes® was born from a commitment to provide a sacred space for that courage to exist. My promise is to walk beside you as a dedicated advocate and companion, ensuring your journey is guided by purpose, clarity, and dignity.
